Attention! Please?
Advertising has changed tremendously in a short amount of time. I grew up with Saturday morning cartoons and the ads that were shown throughout them. Now, I get texts directly from advertisers. I certainly appreciate a texted coupon for a product I have looked at online. A lot of the time, these are useful and lead me to buy the item.
I will admit that five year old me was in awe of the ads for new toys and yummy snacks, so it was easy to capture my attention. It's been a while since my days of cereal and cartoons. So what does it take today to make an ad that people will watch when their attention is already divided between so many different things?
Here are some of the most popular social media ads
What are some of your favorite ads from social media? Which ones did you like the least?
Everyone is so busy these days. The question of what leads people to spend their time on one social media platform versus another is one I have also been thinking about. There have been many social media platforms over the years, some more successful than others. Forbes shares their tips on what makes a successful social media app
Which social media platforms have you used over the years? What made you decide to leave? What has led you to continue using one platform over another?
So I use Instagram and Facebook the most. I have Snapchat but rarely use it, even though that seems to be the most popular of my kids. I also use Messenger for many reasons, but prefer texts. I use Facebook the most out of any of them but I think that is because where most of my friends seem to post and connect. However, now anyone with an Instagram account can connect their Facebook accounts and post simultaneously. I also choose Facebook because I have been on it the longest and love that I can look back on my own past posts. When the memory notification pops up each day, I enjoy going back and looking at my kiddos when they were younger and seeing what I was doing 15 years ago on this day. BUT the ads drive me insane! I would much rather see a commercial on TV than all of the push on my feed.
ReplyDeleteI used to use Tumblr in my early 20s, and it was a great website for a time. For a while, it was just a place where people could reblog. Followers weren't *as* important. Sure, people enjoyed having a lot of followers, like any social media site, but you could also just blog into the void. When it was purchased by Yahoo! https://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/20/technology/yahoo-to-buy-tumblr-for-1-1-billion.html, there was a noticeable shift. There are ads now (with the option to subscribe for add free content, of course), and they've also gone the way of other social media apps where you can watch live sessions from creators. I hate to sound like an old fogey, but I do miss life pre-social media.
