Social Media Fatigue
Is social media fatigue putting out the fire that social media once was? As I scroll through my friend's posts on a regular basis I have noticed some seem to go MIA every now and then. There are many reasons behind this, including annoyance with the constant bombardment of ads and agendas thrown at them. Content creators and shopping are taking over social media and not everyone is happy about that. I know I am tired of scrolling through Facebook and Instagram only to find ad after ad after ad and then reel after reel after reel...it's a neverending search just to see my friends' postings of their kids' first day of school outfits! In fact three days after the first day I am still seeing posts I missed. It's rather absurd and frustrating.
As shared in a CBS report on September 1 of this year, some of us want them to "make Instagram Instagram again!" It sounds a bit like people are using DMs and stories to share their lives these days and trying to find ways to avoid all that promotional content. I tend to stick to posts but am now pondering the use of stories and keeping up to date on friends through them. According to this report Discord and Geneva are the places to go now to connect to people who share common interests.

I found myself nodding along with the CBS interview. I've also noticed a significant increase in ads as I am scrolling through Facebook. I had wondered why I was seeing some posts shown later, also. What you mention about friends going MIA and taking breaks from social media also is familiar, it certainly has been the case for a few of my friends. It feels overwhelming to have to sift through everything just to get to the content you want, so I can see why people are moving towards DM's to carry on conversations. I know my friends and I do. It would be interesting to know how many people just 'tune out' the ads due to the sheer volume of them, and just go on with their scrolling without the content of the ads actually registering with them.
ReplyDeleteI understand what you mean about social media fatigue with the platforms no longer being what they once were. Admittedly, I'm not on much social media, but I have noticed changes in TikTok after joining the app in spring of last year. TikTok used to be just about videos creators post, and users could go to someone's bio to find links to other accounts of theirs including places to buy things they promote or even sell themselves. Now, TikTok shop is growing in popularity, so users do not even need to leave the app to buy what is being promoted! I feel like social media platforms once were specialized but now constantly change or add new features. That's great for company growth, but I wonder how many social media companies ever ask their existing users what they want from the app/website.
