Will I ever learn?

Last year I fell for it, more than once.  Blasting into my face during my morning scrolls through Instagram and Facebook are the neverending ads we all complain about.  I never know what to buy for my 90-year-old mother-in-law for Christmas.  She has everything she needs and doesn't have many hobbies at her age.  But she does love birds!  And there, in my feed, was the perfect window decoration!  Click...the price is right, and the image looks perfect, so why not?  October passes, November passes, and then...December passes.  OK, well, how about for her birthday in February then, since this thing hasn't shown up on my porch yet.  Doesn't February go by too!  Finally, it arrived in March, after attempting to contact the company many times.  The birds were distorted, the hanger looked crooked, and it was definitely not what I saw in that Instagram post.  Did I learn my lesson? Nope.  I just ordered chapstick from Kobees this morning.  This guy showed up in my feed telling me he is making sustainable chapstick out of only a handful of natural ingredients and part of the proceeds are going to charities.  I did a quick google search and it looks legit.  So yup, fell for it again.  I will have to let you know what happens when I receive it!

  1. `I can truly relate to this. It seems that we get a continuous stream of advertising on Facebook, and some of it just looks so tempting. Personally, I get ads for clothing and makeup. Pretty sweaters that just look so cozy, or lipstick that promises to stay on all day. I have never found a lipstick that will stay on all day, and yet, I hold out hope that these ads will come through with one. It's so hard to know if the reviews can be depended on. More often than not, I end up turning to the brands I have shopped with before. I know that they will deliver, even if it means missing out on a product that could potentially be that stay all day lipstick. Keep me posted about Kobees, I need to hear what happens!

  2. I just watched Kobe Harris' TikTok & I'll definitely order some lip balm. The compostable packaging and the charitable intentions that you mentioned are big selling points, as is his independent spirit. Burts Bees started in Maine that way. He seems to mean business, so I'm optimistic that you'll get your shipment. Keep us posted & I'll do the same. Your description of the bird-themed window decoration reminded me of a comment I heard on one of Bloomberg Radio's analysts segments recently. A guest was talking about the decline in Amazon products (real or perceived), in part because the company does not vet vendors as they did in the early years of their business. I can't find the segment, and I heard it in the car, but it speaks to what a wide array of products they sell, given major brands (that already have a loyal following) also sell through Amazon. Let's hope Kobe prevails!

  3. My mom is guilty of this! She often buys things from China, but being a bigger woman, the clothes never fit her. Sadly I don't think she will ever learn as she's been doing this the past 10 years! I've always had good luck with clothes, but have had a few mishaps with size. One of my favorite sites Yes Style occasionally contains clothes that are "one size only" despite being very thin i am never somehow thin enough for these! I've seen a few nightmare stories on tiktok of products not looking/performing like advertised. it makes me wonder if there was/should be laws against this that should exist? isn't it technically false advertising?
